Description:
God created you with emotions and they are part of how you image Him. Your emotions have a purpose, but intense emotions can lead to big challenges in your life. They can interfere with your everyday functioning and your spiritual development.
  • You know the Bible says to “be anxious for nothing” and you believe intellectually that God will take care of all of your needs, but you can’t control your worry and rumination.
  • You know God says “in your anger do not sin” and you want to obey, but you find yourself yelling at the ones you love, acting in passive aggressive ways, or engaging in revenge fantasies about someone who has harmed or wronged you.
  • You know the Bible tells you to “press on toward the prize,” but you feel depressed, unmotivated, discouraged, and tempted to give up on trying to feel or do better.
In these situations, merely exercising our will power is not enough. Our intense emotions reveal our need for heart change. In fact, our ability to regulate emotions can be an indication that our hearts are being transformed. Vital to this process therefore is learning the practical skills needed to grow emotionally.

This seminar will introduce you to skills and concepts that can help you understand your emotions and respond to them appropriately and effectively. It will equip you with tangible strategies for regulating emotions and connecting them with your thoughts and behaviors--connections which reveal the heart. You will also learn the skill of mindfulness and practice it with guidance at several points during the workshop.

This seminar is especially recommended for people who struggle with worry, anxiety, depression, or anger. It is also designed to assist caregivers and ministry leaders in understanding how to offer compassionate care.

Note: an optional follow-up workshop will also be offered starting Tuesday, June 4th (see info below). The Emotion Regulation Skills Workshop will provide a supportive environment to continue learning strategies for managing emotions and to practice them with guidance and feedback.

Instructor:
The instructor is Julie Reinhold, an NY State licensed clinical psychologist with expertise in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), a cognitive behavioral approach for dealing with intense emotions and emotional dysregulation. See full bio in the RCS staff page.

Description:
This 8-week, intensive workshop is an optional follow-up to the Nurturing Healthy Emotions Seminar (see info above). It will have limited enrollment. Note: participation in the seminar is recommended, but not required. The workshop will differ from the seminar in that it will entail a small group setting, and involve more intensive teaching and interaction.

This workshop is open to participants who are struggling with emotional sensitivity, intense emotions, and difficulty recovering from overwhelming emotions. It is designed to help members develop skills to help regulate moods, be more effective in getting their desires met in relationships, and increase their ability to direct their thoughts and actions. Members will complete homework and practice the skills between sessions in order to achieve maximum benefits.

The group will utilize materials developed by Marsha Linehan: Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Training modules. This workshop in fact is an excellent way to be introduced to (or review) the core skills of DBT in a condensed format, with the guidance of a Christian therapist and in the context of community.
