Neighborhood Fair and Coat Drive

October 15, 2023 from 11:45 am - 12:15 pm

One of the most frequent patterns in Scripture is God’s love for what many call the Quartet of the Vulnerable: the poor and oppressed, the immigrant, the widow, and the orphan (Zechariah 7:9-10a). Because the Bible forms everything we do, we’ve partnered with six Hope for New York Affiliates to fulfill this call for our church community: Avail, Bowery Mission, Dream Center, Open Door, Safe Families, and Young Life.

Representatives from each affiliate and Hope For New York will have tables set out in the back outside the Temple Israel sanctuary as you leave. They are so excited to talk to you about the work they are doing and how you can join them in the transformative mission of Gospel renewal in New York City.

If you're looking for ways to grow in following Jesus by loving the vulnerable in our city and need a place to serve, this fair is for you. If you’re already serving and are curious about how God is working in our church and city, and you want to know how to pray for Hope For New York and our affiliates, this fair is for you too. They need your help, and we're pleased that they're taking the time to come and share their mission and need with us so that God’s renewal continues to spread across our neighborhood and the city.

Another way to follow Jesus and love our neighbors in the city is to donate your gently used coats or jackets to our Migrant Coat Drive during the Neighborhood Fair. There are thousands of migrants who have come to our city seeking a better life for themselves and their families. For various reasons they arrive with only the clothes on their backs which provide no protection against the New York winter, so the need for coats is great.

That’s why we’re partnering with Expansion Church in Long Island City; they’re doing amazing work with migrants in our city. We're collecting gently used jackets and coats of all sizes to help the foreigner in our city (Deuteronomy 10:18-19). So please take an inventory of what you’ve got in your closet and bring what you can. At this time we’re just focusing on coats since the cold weather is fast approaching.

To gain a better understanding of the migrant crisis and its effects on homelessness in NYC, attend the HFNY Symposium on Thursday, October 26, at Redeemer West Side. The influx of people in need has impacted the work of HFNY’s affiliates, and we can help by praying, serving, and giving.
